SUMMARY:Coaching Up & Coaching Out
DESCRIPTION:Are you spending too much time managing low performance and not enough time growing your future leaders? It’s time to refine your talent strategy. This session breaks down the critical skills of Coaching Up—developing teachers and school staff by empowering Assistant Principals\, instructional coaches\, team leads\, and department chairs—and Coaching Out—recognizing the precise moment it’s time to let staff go. Learn how to scale your leadership through others and confidently navigate the tough decisions required to keep your school moving forward.\n \n One of the most profound challenges school leaders face is managing staff underperformance. Left unaddressed\, chronic underperformance drains high-performing teachers\, fractures school culture\, and directly compromises student achievement. This session equips elementary and high school principals with a rigorous\, compassionate framework to distinguish between Coaching Up (investing in capacity building) and Coaching Out (transitioning a staff member out of a role with dignity).\n \n Grounded in the "No Surprises" rule of leadership\, participants will learn how to normalize daily and weekly micro-feedback loops to completely eliminate end-of-year evaluation anxiety. Leaders will move away from subjective\, "feelings-based" notes and master the art of legally sound\, objective documentation. Finally\, this session provides turnkey scripts to navigate difficult "Crossroads" conversations and neutralize common defensive avoidance tactics (such as deflection and strategic absenteeism)\, ensuring that the burden of professional growth shifts back to the staff member while keeping student needs at the center of every decision.\n

SUMMARY:CPS Family AI Guide Videos: Resources for GenAI Family Communications
DESCRIPTION:When speaking about generative AI\, it's imperative that everyone involved in the conversation has a shared understanding of AI\, what it's helpful for\, and when other options should be considered. However\, not every parent or guardian has the same level of technical experience\, and it can make conversations about AI in education even more challenging. To address this\, the AI Literacy Working Group has created a series of family facing videos to help explain the role of generative AI and artificial intelligence as a whole within CPS' instructional vision. Each video ranges from 3-5 minutes in length and is intended for all levels of technical experience. Within the session\, participants will watch some of the videos created by the working group. They will also share with each other the strategies they have found most helpful when engaging with families and community members. Participants will leave not only with video resources to share with families\, but with other educational resources and peer guidance to help their communities understand the role of generative AI in the district and in education as a whole.

SUMMARY:Moving from “qualified students” to “supported students.”
DESCRIPTION:(Note: this is being submitted on behalf of Keanon Thompson who is out of office. He will need to revise once he is back in office.) How do we transition our school cultures from filtering systems that seek "qualified" students to empowering environments that "support" all students? This interactive session demonstrates how school leaders can use student artifacts to drive strategic planning. This session provides a model that operates on the belief that you do not have to be an expert in a teacher’s content to be an asset to their context.

SUMMARY:Student Trust and Adult Responsibility: Socializing Student Voice Data
DESCRIPTION:Student perception data can be powerful — and emotionally complex — for school communities to navigate. This interactive session explores how one school designed and implemented a phased\, teacher leader-driven approach to socializing Cultivate data in ways that built trust\, supported adult learning\, and honored student voice. As a result of this work\, the school saw significant gains in key student perception measures\, including a 20-point increase in Teacher Caring and a 17-point increase in Student Voice within one school year on Cultivate.\n \n Grounded in the idea that “student trust equates to adult responsibility\,” participants will examine why student voice initiatives sometimes fail to lead to meaningful change and how intentional leadership moves can create conditions for reflection rather than defensiveness. Leaders will explore how facilitation\, pacing\, psychological safety\, and transparent revision processes helped move staff from data exposure toward meaningful dialogue and instructional action.\n \n Through authentic artifacts\, collaborative discussion\, and planning time\, participants will leave with practical tools\, facilitation strategies\, and a draft rollout plan for socializing student voice data within their own school communities.

SUMMARY:Teaching Environmental & Climate Justice Across Classrooms and Communities (and meaningfully align to the SY27 ISBE climate education mandate)
DESCRIPTION:This session will consider how environmental justice teaching and learning exemplifies effective instruction\, aligns with the CPS Vision toward connectedness and wellbeing\, and supports leaders in alignment to the ISBE environmental education mandate\, which now requires climate change education across all K–12 grade schools.\n School leaders will explore how these opportunities and approaches transcend traditional boundaries between classroom and community\, indoors and outdoors\, and across generations\, disciplines\, and local to global contexts. School leaders will also consider how to troubleshoot and problem-solve to avoid some of the barriers to this work that have cut short its potential in the past. \n Finally\, we'll discuss insights from recent convergences of CPS teachers\, leaders\, and students\; environmental justice community partners\; and education researchers as a jumping off point for school leaders to reflect on existing or needed infrastructures and environments to support teachers to cross these boundaries in their instruction.

SUMMARY:"Who you talking to?": Having Courageous Conversations While Maintaining Positive Relationships
DESCRIPTION:The title is a reality check. When communication breaks down\, that defensive thought\, "Who are you talking to?" is exactly what triggers walls to go up. The goal of this session is to teach people how to speak so clearly\, and with such evident respect\, that the defensive walls never have a reason to be built in the first place. True professional growth and organizational health thrive on radical candor\, yet most people avoid difficult conversations out of fear of conflict or damaged relationships. This presentation tackles the uncomfortable head-on. Participants will learn how to dismantle defensive reactions\, speak with uncompromised clarity\, and deliver high-stakes feedback without burning bridges. By mastering the balance between fierce accountability and deep psychological safety\, leaders and educators will discover that the most courageous conversations don't end relationships\; they strengthen them.

Finally\, this session provides turnkey scripts to navigate difficult "Crossroads" conversations and neutralize common defensive avoidance tactics (such as deflection and strategic absenteeism)\, ensuring that the burden of professional growth shifts back to the staff member while keeping student needs at the center of every decision.\n \n

DESCRIPTION:This session introduces leaders to the 'Tactical Meeting' structure (based on Patrick Lencioni's Death By Meeting\, 2004)—a concrete method to help teams achieve more in less time. A Tactical Meeting is a productive approach for ILT/CIWP Implementation teams to increase their collaboration\, shared accountability\, equity of voice\, and efficiency. The structure is ideal for larger schools\, those building internal systems\, and those focusing on distributed leadership. Participants will first explore an ideal system of meetings types and then dive into experiencing a realistic Tactical Meeting. This model is already succeeding at multiple levels within CPS\, including several CPS schools and some networks\; SLI participants will have access to additional support throughout SY27 to implement strong Tactical Meetings.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Echo Chamber: Using AI to Strengthen Leadership Judgment
DESCRIPTION:As generative AI becomes increasingly embedded in leadership work\, school leaders face an important question: Will AI deepen our thinking — or simply reinforce what we already believe? This interactive session explores how school leaders can intentionally use AI as a thought partner that sharpens leadership judgment\, surfaces blind spots\, and strengthens equitable and anti-racist decision-making rather than functioning as an affirmation engine or echo chamber. Grounded in authentic leadership dilemmas and reflective practice\, participants will examine how AI can help leaders interrogate assumptions\, identify unintended consequences\, and consider perspectives that may otherwise be overlooked — particularly for leaders whose positionality or lived experiences may limit visibility into how decisions are experienced by marginalized communities. Leaders will also explore the limits of AI and the leadership work that must remain deeply human\, including trust-building\, ethical decision-making\, community engagement\, and repair. Participants will leave with practical protocols\, leadership reflection prompts\, and a built or revised AI leadership profile customized to their leadership values\, priorities\, and communication style. The session centers the idea that the goal is not to create an AI tool that always agrees with us\, but rather one that understands our values well enough to challenge us meaningfully.

SUMMARY:What Is Actually Happening With AI in Our Schools?
DESCRIPTION:Grounded in a district-wide study of AI adoption at Chicago Public Schools\, drawing on insights from 25 interviews with leadership and 18 staff focus groups\, this 60-minute interactive session translates institutional trends into immediate action for your building. After a quick look at observable CPS data patterns\, you will spend the majority of the session working through three structured protocols designed for instant school-level application. You will skip the abstract theory\, collaborate with peer leaders\, and leave with three completed artifacts you can put to work with your staff the following week.\n \n By the end of this session\, you will be able to:\n - Identify which staff in your building have foundational AI literacy and articulate why a single training approach fails.\n - Design one specific\, time-bound action to advance responsible AI integration using frameworks from the district-wide research.\n - Connect your school’s AI challenges to broader CPS patterns\, reducing isolation and building a shared community of practice.

SUMMARY:Achieve More in Less Time with the “Tactical Meeting”

SUMMARY:Elevating SCS Leadership Teams: Strengthening Shared and Distributive Leadership within the SCS Leadership Team
DESCRIPTION:Distributive leadership provides the structural framework for teamwork within the school walls. Traditionally\, distributive leadership focuses on tapping the expertise of internal staff—teachers\, instructional coaches\, and assistant principals—to share the burden of school management and instructional growth.\n \n SCS Shared Leadership truly activates the SCS model by transforming a traditional hierarchy into a school community rooted in equity by centering the voices of parents\, students\, educators\, and community partners as co-designers of the school's vision. By actively involving parents\, students\, community members\, and partners\, "the team" expands beyond the school payroll.\n \n Ultimately\, school transformation thrives when internal pedagogical expertise and community-rooted wisdom are treated with equal value—working in tandem to support the whole child\, dismantle barriers to learning\, and foster a student-empowered\, community-driven school environment.

SUMMARY:From Absence to Action: Collaboratively Supporting Chronically Absent Students via the MTSS Continuum and Leveraging CO Supports
DESCRIPTION:When a student is chronically absent\, it is rarely just an "attendance issue"—it is a complex puzzle that no single educator can solve alone. Too often\, our efforts to get students back into the classroom feel fragmented\, leaving teachers overwhelmed and families disconnected. But what happens when we stop working in silos and start working as a unified team? Together\, we will map out practical\, team-driven strategies across all three tiers of support: Tier 1: Strengthening school-wide cultures of belonging and proactive family engagement. Tier 2: Deploying targeted\, group-based interventions like mentoring and attendance circles. Tier 3: Coordinating intensive\, individualized community and wrap-around supports for our most vulnerable students.

SUMMARY:Keeping the Main Thing the Main Thing: Four operational tools that allow administrators to focus on instruction
DESCRIPTION:Research shows that schools dramatically improve when their leaders spend 50% or more of their time on instruction\, but there are always so many logistical details that take up our time. We'll share four systems we have created or adapted to our high school that streamline operations\, improve leadership distribution\, and allow our admin team to focus more on teaching and learning than firefighting. Benefits include: increased measures of school coherence and operational excellence in 5Es\, improved feedback from teachers on REACH and non-evaluative observations\, and increased instructional support for teachers and departments.

SUMMARY:Leading Equity and Conflict Conversations with Self-Awareness
DESCRIPTION:Leading conversations about race\, systemic bias\, and equity requires more than just strategic planning\, it requires profound self-awareness. When faced with challenging equity discussions\, our bodies often register discomfort before our minds fully process it\, triggering physiological responses like fight\, flight\, or freeze. This session bridges neurobiology and systemic leadership to help school leaders recognize how emotions manifest physically in the body. Participants will learn how to leverage trauma-informed principles to navigate intense emotional landscapes\, co-design inclusive spaces\, and share power with their communities. By grounding our physiological responses\, we can cultivate the resilience needed to actively disrupt inequitable systems and lead our schools toward transformative equity.
